Turmeric has been used thousands of years (particularly in Asia) and it is believed to be the “healthiest spice” in the world. People use it to naturally cure various types of diseases such as chronic inflammation, digestive tract problems, and even cancer. In addition, this spice detoxifies the body by eliminating harmful toxins including free radicals. It has also been helpful in improving metabolism while fighting infections. But does it have side effects?

Still, it is advisable that people with bleeding disorders practice caution when taking concentrated turmeric supplements since it can slow down blood clotting and increase the risk of bleeding and bruising.

 

  • It stimulates contractions.
    For pregnant women, it is not advisable to take turmeric supplements as it can trigger uterine contractions, which means stimulating the uterus and possibly endangering the pregnancy and leading to a premature birth. But small amounts won’t be a problem — just don’t overdose. Or better yet, consult with your doctor before taking it.

 

  • For people who use turmeric as a topical treatment.
    They can be allergic to it, which can result in a mild, itchy rash.

 

  • Other reported side effects of turmeric include:
    Diarrhea, nausea, increased menstrual flow, lowered blood pressure or hypotension, worsening of gallbladder problems, and a possible decrease in blood sugar among diabetics.

To avoid the side effects of turmeric, it’s important to know how much you should take daily. Of course, it would be more beneficial to people with no medical conditions. However, for those who are also taking other medications, it’s not completely recommended taking turmeric supplements without consulting their doctor. To completely benefit from the healing power of this golden spice, always follow these expert tips:

On average, you can use 3 grams of ground turmeric every day. That would be one and a half teaspoon of turmeric powder per day. For supplements, it is recommended to get a daily dose of 400 to 600 milligrams, three times a day, though you can reduce the amount by 500 milligrams and take it up to four times a day.
