Why You Should Keep A Bottle Of Lemon Essential Oil At Home

You’ve probably heard about the myriad health benefits of essential oils.

With seemingly endless information floating around, it may be difficult to separate fact from fiction. But scientific and anecdotal evidence alike support the assertion that lemon essential oil is one of the most generally helpful of all available essential oils.

Below, we’ll look at some of the often-surprising household and health benefits of this essential oil.

1. It May Help Burn Fat

This claim might sound far-fetched, but there’s some scientific truth to it. Granted, lemon oil won’t take ten pounds off you in an instant, but it does have the capability to possibly increase your ability to burn fat. This was supported by a study published in Experimental Biology and Medicine. This study found that simply breathing in the scent of lemon oil stimulated neurologic activity that supported the breakdown of fat in the body. If you’re looking to lose a few pounds, it may be worthwhile to breathe in lemon oil a few times a day. This oil has a pleasant scent, so it may also be a calming influence.

2. It Can Ease Nausea and Vomiting Associated With Pregnancy

One study of 100 pregnant women who experienced nausea and vomiting found that the aroma of lemon oil may be an effective treatment method for this side effect of pregnancy. In the study, women in the group that was exposed to lemon essential oil saw an average of a 33 percent decrease in nausea and vomiting after only four days. Interestingly enough, this study looked at how the oil affected the women during the bouts of vomiting and nausea, so lemon essential oil may be an effective way to stop, or at least mitigate, these pregnancy symptoms once they have already started.

3. It is Rich in Antioxidants

You might think that lemon oil comes from the fruit of the lemon, but it actually comes from the rind, which is the most nutrient-dense part of the lemon. This essential oil has been used therapeutically for centuries, and now scientists are discovering why. Lemon oil appears to be rich in d-limonene, which is a powerful antioxidant. “Antioxidant” may be a health buzzword, but antioxidants have very real health benefits. They combat the activity of free radicals in the body, and this can slow the aging process and reduce your risk of cancer. For this reason, some people like to add a few drops of the oil to their water or tea on a daily basis.

4. It May Reduce Nerve Damage

One study on geraniol, an antioxidant component of lemon oil, found that supplementation can reduce inflammation from oxidative stress. The study involved supplementing rats with diabetic neuropathy with geraniol for eight weeks. At the end of the study, sciatic nerve damage was reduced. While this is not a result that has been replicated in humans, it nonetheless suggests that lemon oil may be beneficial in treating neuropathy and other nerve issues. This promising study indicates that we may see more medical uses for this oil in the near future.

5. It Can Restore a Variety of Household Items

Thus far, many of the items on this list have had to do with lemon essential oil’s health benefits. However, this oil has plenty of benefits beyond improving your health. It’s an excellent thing to have around the house, as it has many applications there, too. Lemon oil is commonly used as an ingredient in wood cleaners, and it also can restore the shine to leather shoes and other items. Similarly, rubbing lemon essential oil on tarnished silver will restore the metal’s initial shine. It’s an inexpensive way to keep many of your household items looking shiny and new.

6. It Can Degrease Your Hands

If you’ve ever tried to wash your hands after working on your car or bike, you know firsthand how tough it is to remove grease. If soap alone isn’t cutting it, the solution is simple – just add a few drops of lemon oil to your soap and quickly banish the grease. Plus, the light but pleasant scent of the oil will remain on your hands much like a scented soap would.

7. It Can Disinfect Naturally

There is evidence to suggest that lemon essential oil has the most antimicrobial properties of all the essential oils. This is part of why it works so well as an additive to soap, and it also means that it can be a great way to naturally disinfect your home. A mixture of lemon oil and white vinegar or witch hazel is an excellent way to disinfect if you would rather not inhale the scent of bleach and alcohol.

8. It May Mitigate the Effects of Dementia

One of lemon essential oil’s more surprising applications is in the treatment of dementia. One study of the benefits of aromatherapy on dementia patients (many of whom had Alzheimer’s) found that patients who were exposed to lemon essential oil seemed significantly less disoriented after the treatment. They also did not experience any negative side effects, which means that lemon essential oil may be a helpful way to help dementia patients cope.

9. It Can Remove Sticky Residues

Whether you’re trying to remove a sticker from a water bottle or trying to get rid of a mystery residue, getting rid of stickiness is often an arduous task. And while there are specialized products available for this express purpose, you can simply use a few drops of lemon oil. The same properties that enable this oil to cut grease help it to cut through and remove those stubborn adhesive residues from a variety of sources.

In conclusion, while there are plenty of essential oils to choose from, lemon oil is one of the most practically useful oils you can buy. When you pick up a bottle, you have a health supplement, a perfume, and a household cleaning aid all in one. Try one of the above uses today!
